Battle of the Draft Grades: Team AFC West vs Team NFC West
Today we have the Team AFC West versus Team NFC West to see which conference had the better draft based only what team needed. The grades are not based on the overall talent that was draft but if the team used the draft to meet team needs. I thought it would be an amusing way to take look at how teams did with their picks in the draft.
Team AFC West has the Denver Broncos who shocked world with their draft selections. Although, they were probably more talented QBs out there they did get their QB in Tim Tebow. Overall, they earned a grade C+ because for the most part players they selected could possibly meet their team needs.
Kansas City Chiefs may have got the most talented defensive player in the draft in Safety Eric Berry, but the Chiefs missed the mark getting what they needed out this year draft. I awarded a draft grade of C. They met three of their needs via the draft.
The Oakland Raiders actually did a great job this year in the draft. The acquisition of QB Jason Campbell from Washington Redskins eliminated the need to draft for a quarterback. They drafted DT Lamarr Houston out of the University of Texas that helped their defensive line needs. The Raiders did a decent job in the 2010 NFL Draft; therefore, they earned a draft grade of a B.
San Diego Chargers receives a draft grade of C, because they only managed to get a few pieces they needed to execute their game plan. I know everyone maybe puzzled by the need for QB but San Diego needed a backup to Phillip Rivers; therefore, they addressed that need with their 5th round selection, QB Jonathan Crompton. He gets the chance to make the squad.
Team NFC West done very well in this year draft. Arizona Cardinals look to have used the draft to their advantage as most of their needs were met. It seems it was pretty popular trend to pick quarterbacks in the 5th round as Arizona picked up Skelton to perhaps challenge for the starting quarterback position. The Cardinals received a grade of a B because most there needs were properly met.
San Francisco 49ers had a few needs coming in to the draft because some of their players were picked up via trade. WR Ted Ginn, Jr. was key pick up from Miami that would help them in the Kick Return game. The 49ers picked up a couple of offensive linemen and this solidified their grade of a B.
Seattle Seahawks did a great job with the selection of their players. They probably needed a quarterback, but it is not a dire need at the moment. Pete Carroll first draft as the Seahawk’s Head Coach was a success. His teams earns a score of a B
St. Louis addressed their greatest need by drafting the best QB in the draft, Sam Bradford. This draft pick by itself should have merited an A, but they missed not drafting the backup running back for Stephen Jackson. Overall, the Rams earn a B for such a great draft.
Team NFC West blows away the competition as their team did a better job addressing their teams’ needs The Draft Grade Battle saga continues tomorrow with Team NFC South competing against Team AFC North.
