Super size that Bracket Buster Please
Can I get an order of upset, with a side of who would have thought, and do not forget to supersize the Bracket Buster. Super sized bracket buster it was as three top seeded team fell in NCAA Men Basketball tournament action on Saturday.
3rd seeded New Mexico and 2nd seeded Villanova both fell , but the bracket buster of monstrous proportions occurred in the Mid West Region , as top seed of the entire tournament Kansas was sent packing by a gutty 9th seeded Northern Iowa team. Kansas early exit destroyed a lot of brackets around the country including President Obama as he picked the Jayhawks to win it all.
3rd seeded New Mexico was done in by a streaking 11th seeded Washington Huskies squad 82-64. New Mexico was forced to play the style of game that was most suited for Washington as the final score reflected. New Mexico had no answer for Quincy Poindexter and his 18 points. Isaiah Thomas would have made the other Isaiah Thomas, the great NBA legendary Detroit Piston point guard proud as he dished out 7 assists and scored 15 points. New Mexico manage to keep their streak alive in their loss, they have never won consecutive games in any of the NCAA tournaments they have played.
2nd Seeded Villanova tasted defeat as it was served up by at the 10th seeded Saint Mark Gaels. The final score was 75 -68 and 32 of the Gaels point production came from Omar Samhan. Samhan played within the offense and his 13-16 field goal shooting is a testament to it. 6’ 11’ Samhan used his big body to shred Villanova defense on the inside.
Other Gaels that contributed to the bracket buster upset victory of Villanova were Guards Mickey McConnell and Matthew Dellavedova. The two Guards combined for 29 points with McConnell outpointing his teammate by 1 point with 15 points for the game. It was just what was needed as they move on to the Sweet 16 to face a very good Baylor Bears squad.
Rock Chalk Jayhawks of Kansas were chalked out of brackets around the country as the 9th seeded Northern Iowa Panthers. By far, it is one of the biggest win in school’s history and most definitely the greatest upset of this year’s tournament.
This game will be forever remembered by the statement making shot taken by Ali Farokhmanesh with about 34 seconds left in the game. Statement that shot made for the entire Northern Iowa squad and their play was going for it all or nothing.
The final score of 69-67 was the little skinny kid punching the big bully in mouth and walking away to keep his lunch money. Kansas Guard Sherron Collins was unable to put the team on his back in waning moments as he has done all year. Northern Iowa defense held him in check by holding him to just 10 points.
Northern Iowa played great defense and would not buckle under the mystique of Kansas Jayhawks who everyone including myself picked to win it all. They stood their ground and took down college basketball juggernaut on an excellent defensive effort.
Upset after upset in this year tournament have me to continue to say as I stated in my post 16th Seed to the Final Four Let the Madness Begin, this is the year of the upset. It does show that there is a lot of parody in this year tournament.
They are few more surprises left in this tournament, but there would be none greater than what the 10th seeded Northern Iowa Panthers managed on Saturday. They truly served up a Super Size Bracket Buster with their victory over Kansas.
