Random Thoughts and rants of a Sports Fan
Random sports thoughts or rants, but let us begin. Carmelo Anthony has been called unselfish this season and he has been playing lights out. He has not been the most unselfish player throughout his career; therefore, it is good Mike Woodson has him believing in his teammates. Melo is putting MVP numbers up in the absence of their other superstar Amare Stoudemire. How well can these two guys play together? By adding Stoudemire, will it derail a good New York Knick team? It has been a basketball experiment that has not worked out thus far. Mike Woodson has Melo sharing the ball and playing a little defense then it is not out of the realm of possibility, he can get both Melo and Amare to take his team deep into the playoffs.
Jumping to the NFL, the league is pondering playoff expansion. NFL wants to switch to 14 or 16 team playoff format from the 12 teams that already play for a spot in the biggest sports event known to man, the Super Bowl. Before the league think of an expansion of the playoffs, you should change the criteria of what teams are allowed to make to the NFL Playoffs. There have been a few mediocre teams that kept really good teams out of the playoffs. Therefore, I say do not change the number of teams instead keep teams with losing records out of the playoffs and ensure only the best teams are allowed into the post season.
Major League Baseball has seen money spent but how much of it will translate to getting to the World Series? The New York Yankees in the past has broken the bank to get players; however, they have fell short of bringing a title home in recent years. The Los Angeles Dodgers are trying to buy a title with expensive acquisitions. Zack Greinke signs a six year deal with the Dodgers for $147 million is example of spending many teams think they need to have a chance at winning the World Series. Dodgers’ payroll is well over $210 million for next season. Consider that the World Series Champs, San Francisco Giants’ payroll was little over $117 million, but it did not go north of $125 million when they won. Dodgers you may be just digging yourself a hole; however, with the billions they will reap in television contracts spend on.
How long before Kobe Bryant will lose it because of the sinking ship called the Los Angeles Lakers? Lakers may not push the panic button as of yet but they have to wonder when will poor play cease. Kobe is calm for now or at least that is how the media portrays him. He is quite competitive; therefore, the losses are taking its toll. I expect the Lakers will make it to the NBA playoffs but challenging the OKC Thunder that is another story for another time.
