It is only the Preseason.

I often ask why diehard fans think a certain team will win it all, because the team is playing well in the preseason. I wonder how many people like I, do not put any stock in the numbers that a team or individual player produces during the preseason? I hope there is a majority that sides with me, and understand the numbers no matter how gaudy does not spell regular season success.

I respect the football fans, and their support of their team; however, please do not be bamboozled by great play in the preseason. For example, Detroit Lions’ quarterback Matthew Stafford is supposedly having a great preseason, but does that mean he is going to be all-world in the regular season, why of course not. The defenses being used in the preseason are likely to be very basic, and the personnel playing usually are far cry from the elite personnel such as shutdown corner, Darrelle Revis of the New York Jets or a great linebacker like Brian Urlacher of the Chicago Bears.

I do not put too much value on the scores and numbers achieved in preseason games. The statistics are not achieved against a team’s first string for an entire game like in the regular season, and the offensive and defensive playbooks are stripped down to the bare bones, because there is not one coach in the NFL who is crazy enough to reveal the actual strategy they will use during an actual regular season game. Preseason games are for the fans to fill the void until the real games begin. I look at how the Green Bay Packers dismantled the Colts in one of the highest scoring preseason games that I have seen, but I see it as a good game to watch, but would I worry myself if I was Colt fan, No, I would not.

For the over exuberant fan, by all means support your team, but please remember, it is only the preseason and you should assume that team will begin to play for an actual purpose during the regular season. Hey, it is quite interesting to hear and read the comments from the fans that really have the Detroit Lions winning the division or Oakland Raiders sitting on top of the standing for their division. I guess true fans must keep the Faith, but I say be realistic and understand it is only the preseason.
