Los Angeles Lakers wasted no time in finding the next Head Coach after firing Mike Brown. They go with another Mike, in Mike D’Antoni. D’Antoni inks a four year deal and will soon revive the up-tempo style of offense that he made famous in Phoenix. He is a proven mastermind on offense, but his style of play has not translated to any championship rings.
Championship rings are not on D’Antoni’s resume, but the former Lakers’ Coach Phil Jackson has 11 rings. Jackson won more rings than any NBA Coach; therefore, why not give your coaching search a few days to see how talks would have panned out with Phil Jackson. Los Angeles has rushed the process both the firing of Mike Brown and the hiring of D’Antoni. Lakers fans are baffled to why Phil will not be making his return back to the Lakers. Lakers need his leadership and motivation to capture another title.
Defense wins championships and D’Antoni’s teams have not been good defensive teams in the past. Therefore, Lakers may not be the contender everyone expected. Considering the age of the team and other teams in the Western Conference, the up-tempo style of offense with the lack of defense will not help Kobe Bryant to a sixth championship ring.
The games will be fun to watch, but this season is about winning championships and traditionally D’Antoni’s offense and lack of defense has yet to win a NBA Title. Many would say his offense is best suited for the roster in place, but I beg to differ. You need better long-range shooters to run such a wide open style offense. The style of play is not suited for a good post player; therefore, it strips both Pau Gasol and Dwight Howard of their strength on offense.
D’Antoni is the new Head Coach, but if this season ends without a NBA Finals appearance, you will hear why not Phil Jackson a proven winner. Lakers have committed to improving their offense and only time will tell if it was right move for the team.
