Are the Colts Worthy of a Super Bowl Win?

From the Sporty Mouth of dev4life | On: Jul 30 2010

On Thursday, I asked, are the Jets Super Bowl Ready, today we take look at the team that beat the New York Jets for the AFC title and that is the Indianapolis Colts. Last season, the Colts flirted with perfection as they seem do year in and year out and I expect the Colts to keep everyone on the edge of their seat with their annual run on the record of Perfection set by the 1972 Miami Dolphins. It was a typical start for the Colts because for 7 consecutive seasons the Colts have won at least 12 games and has started the season by winning 7 consecutive games for 7 consecutive years. Both feats are NFL records.

If the past is any indicator of a great future then this season will be another great one for the highly successful the Colts. The biggest need for the Colts is a running game. They have done well without a running game because of Manning, but if they had a decent running game they would be able to control the clock little more and it would help against high scoring teams like the New Orleans Saints. Colts dead last in the NFL with a run attack that averaged less than 100 yards per game. This will not cut it and if no changes are made expect more high scoring games that will pressure the defense and make them come up win short from winning the second title with Manning up under center.

The defense must make a great improvement from being ranked 18th in yardage allowed from scrimmage. It would help if their great safety Bob Sanders will be on the field enough games to show why he is pretty good defensive player when healthy. Throughout his career, Sanders have struggled with injury, but when he is on the field he shows just how much of a difference he makes. The Colts did use the draft to address their poor defense by picking Defensive End Jerry Hughes out of TCU in the first round and Linebacker Pat Angerer of Iowa University in the second round. For the Colts’ sake I hope the two players can contribute right away and help Dwight Freeney the star on a struggling defense.

The offensive will get even better with Anthony Gonzalez returning from injury. With the emergence of Austin Collie and Pierre Garcon, Gonzalez will be a bonus to an already lethal receiving corps. Reggie Wayne will head this lethal attack and the reliable Tight End Dallas Clark will remain the primary targets of the best quarterback in the NFL.

With the sum of their parts, the Colts will contend for another AFC title. The AFC is a lot tougher than last year, but it would be difficult to bet against Manning and his Golden arm. He has managed to get the job done without a running game and this year will be no exception. Colts has a great chance to play in the Super Bowl. I like their chances than most of teams that are in the AFC. Hey, it is still training camp; therefore, anything can happen.
